A European Network for Non-CF Bronchiectasis

The EMBARC (European Multicentre Bronchiectasis Audit and Research Collaboration) network was established in 2012 to facilitate multidisciplinary collaborative research in non-CF bronchiectasis. The aims of the EMBARC group are

1. To create the EMBARC registry, a European bronchiectasis registry to facilitate research and quality improvement initiatives across healthcare systems.
2. To build a network of researchers and clinical experts in bronchiectasis to guide future research and clinical priorities
3. To attract new researchers and clinicians to the field of bronchiectasis
4. To support and encourage early career researchers in the field of bronchiectasis through involvement in network activities
5. To facilitate applications to industry and European Union funding sources to build bronchiectasis research capacity in Europe.

Why do we need EMBARC?

Bronchiectasis has historically been an under-research and under-resourced "orphan disease". It is now recognised that bronchiectasis is placing an increasing burden on healthcare systems around the world and there is an urgent need for better treatments, better clinical care and for clinical and translational research in this condition.

EMBARC is the first truly international bronchiectasis network seeking to bring together investigators from around the world. Central to the project is the creation of a multicentre registry of patients with non-CF bronchiectasis. This study will enable a group of experienced researchers across Europe to answer fundamental questions in the epidemiology, aetiology, microbiology, pathophysiology, clinical management and prognosis of bronchiectasis.
